10 Tips For Colourful Eye-catching Makeup Looks For Beginners!

The most important thing about colourful makeup is having fun! I find wearing colourful and creative makeup looks a great way for me to express myself! I have always thought that there are so many amazing colours for a reason; people should experiment with them and get joy out of them! It sometimes feels like I am playing around with makeup like a toddler but that’s also the beauty of it! Kids have the most fun out of anyone and if you can make your inner child happy then you’re doing something right!! This blog post will give you 10 Tips that you can use to add more colour to your Makeup routine!

  1. Don’t Limit Yourself By Old Fashioned Rules

First of all, the most important thing to remember when adding more colour to your makeup is to get rid of any preconceptions of what colours go with which eye colour. When I was starting to experiment with more colours on my eyes; my mom would constantly tell me the pink wouldn’t look good with my brown eyes and I should rather use purple or green as they are complimentary to brown…

However, I’m happy to report that pink is now my most favourite colour to wear on my eyes and I find that it really opens up my eyes and adds a lot of depth to my brown eyes.  I would recommend you do pay attention to the colour wheel but with the mindset of adding more depth to the colours you already added to your eyes; for example, if I have some really light blue on my eyes I love to add a purple on my lower line as it balances all the colours out and both look great on my eyes and bring much more attention to them.

  1. Keep it Simple Stupid!

The second tip for adding more colour to your makeup is start with your favourite colours first as you’ll be much more passionate about them, and you won’t feel as uncomfortable if you’re not used to wearing much colour on your eyes. I find that as long as you’re pleasing yourself in any small way like wearing your favourite colour on your eyes; then you will be less likely to let any weird looks you get to you (speaking from experience LOL).

Once you’re used to wearing your favourite colour you can start adding more and more colours that compliment it; for example my favourite colour is pink and I enjoy adding some orange as well as some blue as they are so complimentary and with all of those colours, my brown eyes practically sparkling!

  1. Experiment with Shapes

The third tip when adding more colour, is that it is very important to decide what shapes work for your eye shape and eyelid variety (hooded etc). I have hooded eyes but I also have enormous eyelids so I have a pretty big surface area to play with and so I love to make a sharp triangular flick at the end which makes my eyes look less hooded and more upturned which is what us hooded girls really want and need (😉).

If you have a smaller eyelid, do not fret! I find that smaller eyelids are much easier to work with as everything becomes much more visible and striking! If you don’t like a strong shape on your eye, you can definitely just blend the colours out; a good tip is to follow your natural eyeball shape when using eye-shadow. It becomes almost like a guide, where you just want to blend the colours as far as your eyeball curve ends and that will give your eyes a lovely pop with the colours peaking through your eyelashes.

  1. Don’t forget to Balance the Look!

The fourth tip for adding more colour is about balancing the makeup look. This is something I’ve only recently started doing and I can say its made all of the difference! Basically, the premise is that if you feel that your look is a little too flat or 1 dimensional then its time to try to introduce more texture and depth through either adding more tones of the original colour you picked for example; if you had a blue base and you felt it was a bit harsh/unfinished; you could add a lighter blue to the corners of your eyes which would not only brighten your eyes but also add some definition to the original blue colour.

This can also be done by using a darker blue colour, but I will warn you that if you add a lot of the darker colour; it will be much more intense so I recommend using the darker colours as a sort of liner effect by using it as a flick at the outer corner or you could blend it very well into the end of your look and it will add gorgeous depth!

Another great tip is to use shapes you wouldn’t expect; for example something I love to do is add circles to my eye looks. I’ll either use my graphic liner to add little dots to outline my makeup look or I will use a small brush and I’ll dip it into an eye-shadow and just poke it on my eye and I have gorgeous and bright circles to accentuate my eyes and the overall look.

  1. Your Brushes are your most important Tools!

Fifth, the brushes you use are super important when it comes to adding colour! This has made the most difference for me in my journey. For eye-shadow I would recommend you stick to thinner brushes as you have more control over where the pigment goes, and this will lead to less mistakes.

If you use or are wanting to start incorporating graphic liner into your eye looks then the biggest tip, I can give you is to buy some really thin and tapered brushes. I bought my graphic liner palettes from Amazon; the first is a matte colours palette and the other is a neon colour palette. And at first I just used the brushes that came with the palette, but it would never be as clean as I had in mind! So when I was in Manchester during the New Year, I went into Morphe and found the Abbey Roberts x Morphe 5-Piece Liner mixing palette and brush set (not sponsored)! which has been the best thing I ever bought! With the right brushes you really can do anything! I found some other great looking and well priced graphic liner brushes on Amazon if you’re looking to get some!

  1. Don’t be afraid of Mistakes!

The sixth tip on this list is to always have some cotton buds on hand or something small that you can wet and wipe any mistakes away with. Every time I do an eye look, I have a whole box of cotton buds at my side for when I inevitably make a mistake! I think having a more creative mindset is the best thing when you’re experimenting with what you like and don’t like on your eyes. You will undoubtedly make mistakes, but I find its usually fixable as long as you don’t get too overwhelmed and focus on the complimentary colours and you can decide the shape of the look any time by just using a cotton bud and cleaning up your lines etc.

  1. Quality vs Quantity!

The last tip for adding more colour to your eye looks is to find eye-shadows that are highly pigmented. There’s nothing more annoying than buying a brand-new palette for the bright colours and then trying to use them when they have no pigment! Now, I don’t want anyone to worry that they have no money for the best eye-shadow palettes that we see on TikTok etc that cost a fortune! I have found some amazing colourful eyeshadow palettes on amazon again that are the best eye-shadows I’ve ever used!

Side note: always check that your eye-shadows don’t have too much talc as that is an eye irritant and has been linked to all sorts of nasty things so if you do have eye-shadows with talc, I would avoid putting them too close to your actual eyeball.

There are some tips you can use to make your lacklustre eye-shadows look more pigmented as well; all you need to do is use a primer or if you don’t have a primer like me; I just use a little bit of moisturiser, or you can even use concealer, as a base underneath the eye-shadow but I would wait for it to dry otherwise it will mix with the eye-shadow and make a muted colour. Another great tip is to scrape a bit of the eye-shadow and mix it with a liquid; for example, water, lotion or concealer etc and that will create a more pigmented paste that you can spread onto your eyes!
