5 Best Ways To Use Accessories To Take An Outfit To The Next Level!

Accessories are so important to an outfit; I would say if the outfit was the main course, the accessories are the dessert! The best thing about accessories is how personal they are to everyone; I don’t think you can find 2 people that have the exact same taste in accessories or in jewellery etc because its such an amazing opportunity for personal expression!

I think the biggest thing to remember is that there are no rules when it comes to expressing yourself. And the great thing about being alive right now is that we have access to the most amazing clothes through places like Vinted and Depop as well as vintage and charity/Thrift shops! And we are even able to create the most amazing pieces with access to free patterns online etc.

I believe when people are able to express themselves through what they put on their bodies and faces (makeup etc) they are much more at peace, and it allows your brain to constantly be more creative. Now that I view the world more as a playground I get to experience and experiment with I am always full of ideas for my next outfit, or I know exactly what kind of silhouette I’m after and I have never felt so creative in my life! Now, onto the tips!

  1. Keep Yourself In Mind

If you’re lost when it comes to planning outfits and accessory combinations then let me help to give you some guidance! The best way to plan an outfit is to decide what colours you want to put together. I like to start off every outfit with a colour scheme in mind; this just helps me to organise my outfit as well as make sure I’m making use of as many combinations as possible! I am definitely more of a maximalist and so I absolutely adore adding more and more to my outfit in every way I can think up!

This will not be the case for everyone so its important for you to know where your style lies; do you have a more casual, minimalist, or street style preferences? In those cases, you would be accessorising in a completely different way to me but that doesn’t mean that any are “wrong”. I think its just the opposite! Its amazing that we all are on different journeys, and we all like different things, which is the way things should be!

  1. Spend some time with your Accessories!

Now that you’ve decided on your outfit; spend some time looking at your accessories by themselves! Looking at your accessories without your outfit in mind will help you to appreciate all their characteristics and potential so that when you do start incorporating your outfit you can know exactly what you’re looking for and know what will achieve what you’re searching for! A great example for me would be that I had this gorgeous long beaded purple necklace that was so beautiful to look at but I could never slot it into an outfit so I looked at it in a different way and I made it into a belt and now I wear it all the time because it adds a gorgeous colour and texture to my bottoms!

This is a great way to view your accessories because then you can never get bored of them and they never lose their usefulness! Another great tip is to keep your accessories as organised as possible; when you cant find anything you might forget about it you might even buy something that you didn’t need in the first place! Its also great to have everything in front of you so you can compare and contrast your pieces side by side and come out with the best combination!

  1. Don’t forget about Texture!

The next thing is to try to add more texture! An example of texture would be something with a suede material or even some fringe etc.. What I’ve been enjoying, is adding layers that I wouldn’t have thought to add previously; for example I recently bought a really puffy sleeved tank top that I reworked so I could wear it underneath anything and that adds a gorgeous silhouette to any tops/dresses I wear! This can also be done with a frilly skirt that you can put underneath another skirt/dress to add some ruffles and texture!

Texture can be added with really anything; something with denim would be a great addition, or you could even add a scrunchie as an arm band which will add a little poof! Another amazing tip that I’ve recently found is that you can rework a scarf and make it into temporary billowy sleeves! I recently tested this out and it was so amazing! If you’re interested, I can do a tutorial on how I created the sleeves with my scarf!

  1. Don’t be afraid of Patterns!

Why would designers make such gorgeous patterns if people shouldn’t be wearing them! I think the mindset of “clashing” patterns is a little outdated and puts a restriction on peoples creativity! If you have a patterned top and bottom and you feel that it looks too much; there are ways to blend it a little more. The best way to make an outfit feel more cohesive is to accessorise wisely. What I mean by that is if you want to take the attention away from the “clashing” patterns a bit then you need to balance the outfit out by adding a neutral accessory like a brown belt or a complimentary colour belt to the patterns you have going on.

Its also a good idea to incorporate your shoes into the look as well! If you’re wearing a more neutral colour shoe you can add neutral colour accessories like a necklace and belt that will tie the shoes in and make the outfit look more put together. But that doesn’t mean you can’t always add more colour! The best part about an outfit is how you style it, don’t forget that the colours you wear are going to wear you as well; choose accessories that make you feel confident and allow you to feel like THAT “Bitch” and you will be able to wear ANYTHING!

  1. Jewellery is everybody’s best friend!

I have spent the better part of the last year scouring charity/ Thrift shops for amazing jewellery that I know I will wear with basically any colour and outfit. I find that it’s really important that the jewellery you own reflects who you are as a person as its one of the most personal things a person owns so why not let it reflect you! I would say I love all things dainty and girly but I also love a bit of spice and edge and that helps me a lot when I want to wear something very girly but I also want to add some snake/tiger earrings which in my mind balances out the “girly-ness” a little bit. Its super important to have a foundation of jewellery that you genuinely love and that you know you can style with basically anything; this will help you to have a default that you can refer to when you get confused or overwhelmed!

The best tip I can give you for finding your perfect jewellery collection is to always check in with yourself; if you see a piece of jewellery and you find that it brings positive emotions out of you like joy, then it might be meant for you! Emotions like joy, curiosity and excitement will never lead you astray in my opinion! As long as you keep in touch with your feelings, you will be choosing things that genuinely speak to you and that will result in your collection being a reflection of your personality and energy!
